Brigus South, Newfoundland-Labrador

O n July 26th 2014, after coming from Mackinsons Some Good Market and picking up our "Some Good Lemon Puffs" we headed to the Southern Shore. On our drive I saw a sign that said Brigus South and just coming from driving through Brigus in the Conception Bay North area I was a bit confused. I had heard of Brigus but not Brigus South so we had to venture. Brigus South is situated between Witless Bay and Cape Broyle. As we made our way into the community it was a small cove and the first thing I noticed was the stage. I Love stages, I don't know why but I love old stages and I was really drawn to this community and I knew there was more to this community then first glance. We got out and started to explore, on the hillside I noticed steps and when there are steps there is a path and with a path there is a destination. So off we went. What a view while we enjoyed our lemon puffs, now it can't get better than that. So we spent the rest of our time checking out the view, eating and enjoying the ducks and goose that live in the small cove. Once home I headed onto the computer and looked into the community. Not much information to be found on the community but I did find a Facebook group that I just had to join. What a great bunch of people; very helpful.

September 16th: I was a woman on a mission to look around Brigus South again and visit with our goose friend Gus (that's what we named him on our first visit). The ducks and geese are super friendly and love to come up and visit. When we entered the community the Newfoundland tunes filled the air, oh yeah my toes where tapping. We danced around the beach and trotted around the community, found the entry paths to the hikes on the East Coast Trail. While forgetting all the things I wanted to discover, we sat and enjoyed a rest on a homemade community bench that just screamed Newfoundland hospitality. I really could spend some serious time hanging out in this quaint little community. When we got home I checked out the trails and where they went. So many trails, so many day trips in the future to be had.

With life happening, Summer ended and Fall was here. It was a while before we got back to Brigus South. It was a rainy, windy Thursday October 30th but I was not letting the weather get me down. Once there we ventured down behind the wharf and round yet another entrance to a path on the East Coast Trail. While up on the side of the harbor looking down on the community from another perspective I noticed what looked like a cross, so I zoomed with the camera and it was a cemetery that I had read about. This cemetery holds some of the oldest serving gravestones on the Southern Shore that date back to 1700's. The graves of 18 men who went ashore in Timber Cove in 1857 on a ship called "The Hammer", by locals, but officially named "The John and Maria". Something now is a must see when we head back on not such a rainy and wet day. Got me wondering does the community hold any ghost stories, something to definitely look into.

With each visit to the community I learn something cool I didn't know and see more and more of what it is that makes me appreciate Newfoundland's beauty. Can't wait to go back in the Winter and check it out with a blanket of snow and then next Summer to hike the East Coast Trail. A wonderful spot to visit and enjoy just some of what Newfoundland has to offer.
